9. Media Transcoding Platform Challenges

Media Transcoding Platform Challenges. Presented by Shrirang Jangi, Sonus Networks.

SIP service providers have a need for media transcoding feature in their network to support incompatible endpoints or interconnect networks with disparate media capabilities and bandwidth requirements. In this talk we explore design issues faced in providing a solution for this feature. Addition of new codecs (e.g. HD codecs) is an obvious need and we highlight some of the less obvious yet crucial challenges such as scaling, scheduling and the like when incorporating these in solutions platform. Service providers have a formidable task of ensuring quality of service and we discuss issues of quality statistics gathering, field debug support. Use of speech codecs requires special treatment for transport of DTMF digits and Fax/Modem signals. DTMF digit transport presents interesting variations and deviations in standards interpretation and we present some cases observed in field. Fax interworking throws yet another set of challenges, and we discuss some of these examples with special attention to new issues emerged due to T.38 version 3 for transport of V.34 fax. Finally we touch upon future solutions which are likely to be distributed, implemented in flexible software-based architecture suitable for cloud deployments.
