Focus on Branded Calling and the Transition to All IP in the Telecommunications Industry
Branded Calling is an exciting, new class of communications services that allow businesses to brand their outbound communications with additional context in the caller ID so call recipients can know and trust who’s calling.
In addition to business name and number, additional call information can include a logo, reason for the call, and a check-mark indicating the call has been authenticated and not spoofed.
The stage is set for Branded Calling to become an important new component of voice calls to mobile numbers, creating additional layers of trust and security to the calls that business make to their customers.
Instead of the standard and limited caller ID information of caller name and number, branded calls can include up to 32 characters to describe the nature of the call.
And thanks to the associated RCD (Rich Call Data) standard developed within the SIP Forum/ATIS IP-NNI Task Force (and which is part of the STIR/SHAKEN Call Authentication Framework), Branded Calls are also able to offer graphics in the form of logos and other rich data in the caller ID.
The net benefit of Branded Calling to service providers is that it presents a valuable new revenue opportunity for their voice calling operations, for businesses the promise of dramatically increased answer rates (there are reports indicating that customers are 105% more likely to answer calls that are branded), and for call recipients a compelling new mechanism of engagement and trust with the brands and companies they do business with.
The benefits of Branded Calling include:
- A New Source of Revenue for Carriers
- Mitigated Call Blocking and Spam Mislabeling of Calls
- Increased Brand Loyalty
- Increased Brand Awareness
- Enhanced Customer Engagement
- Increased Customer Trust
- Enhanced Security against Fraud
- Dramatically Improved Call Answer Rates
The SIP Forum’s BRANDED CALLING SUMMIT will host a number of unique webinars that examine, explore and discuss these incredibly important benefits as well as the business and technical challenges that must be overcome and the best practices for rolling out and supporting a successful Branded Calling service.
In addition, the second day of the event will be dedicated to the transition to an All-IP network infrastructure due to its foundational significance on the reliable delivery of branded calling, call authentication and a host of other communications services and applications. This coverage will include key regulatory actions and a new industry standard designed to accelerate the transition.
Coverage of the Transition to All IP will include a special keynote from Erik Beith, an Attorney Advisor in the Competition Policy Division of the FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau, that will focus on the FCC’s October 2025 Advancing IP Interconnection Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. Erik has worked extensively on robocall policy and implementation, including the Call Authentication Trust Anchor and Robocall Mitigation Database proceedings, and most recently on the Commission’s efforts to advance IP interconnection.
Other sessions will present an overview of the SIP Forum/ATIS IP-NNI Task Force’s groundbreaking work on an “Agreement-Less IP Interconnection over the Internet” or ALIII (an acronym pronounced the same as the word “allies”) industry standard designed to accelerate the transition of interconnects between Approved Voice Service Providers (AVSPs) from Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) interconnects to Internet Protocol (IP) interconnects.
