8. VoLTE and the Impact of its Evolution. Presented by Manpreet Singh, iBasis.

Even though IMS has been deployed across many networks, it's been limited to the fixed space. With the evolution of LTE, mobile operators started converting their core to support IMS-based services including VoLTE, Vilte and RCS-like services. VoLTE itself has many models, which poses challenges for operators and carriers to support. GSMA and 3GPP have defined various models including LBO-VPLMN routed, LBO-VPLMN Routed with OMR, LBO-Home routed, S8/HR etc, each having its own challenges.

With VoLTE also comes the exposure of HD codecs in the IP core networks which weren’t there before. Is there something we need to be looking at to make sure better models are deployed across the carrier domains? Would the carriers need to do something to handle newer codecs and their interoperability with existing fixed network codecs? Does VoLTE introduce any signaling interworking issues?

This presentation will discuss details of the various VoLTE models, their pros and cons, and what kind of challenges the deployment of VoLTE will bring to the fixed and OTT world.
