Hello John,

I believe some of the comments about TR-69 are incorrect. We’ve done a
lot of work with the protocol at the UNH-IOL and I think it would
actually accomplish a lot of the UA configuration goals. Typically, a
CPE device would “wake-up” and inform the auto-configuration server
(ACS) of its existence. From that point on, the ACS is responsible for
the configuration and management of the CPE. These operations are
usually all performed over an HTTPS connection, very similar to SIP via
TLS.

I’d like to introduce Heather Kirksey, who is one of the chairs for the
Broadband Forum group responsible for the creation of the TR-69
protocols. I think, before we create another protocol, we make sure
that an existing and flexible protocol can't accomplish the same task.
Would it be possible some how get more information into the task group's
hands before any final decisions are made about the protocols.

I’ve copied the portions of the minutes pertaining to TR-69 below for
Heather’s reference, as I’m not sure what the SIP Forum’s policies are
on outside access.

Cheers,
Lincoln

------->
TR-69
* Very complex: essentially only a single stack vendor (OEM)
* Deployed in ATA/DSL environments
* Service providers ask for it
* Primary driver is OAMP, not configuration
* TR-69 relies on physical connectivity
