[SIPForum-techwg] SIPconnect 1.1 baseline - IPv6

The intention behind the mentioning of IPv6 needs to be clarified. There
are no normative statements regarding IPv6, although there is a
statement in section 4 that says that the networks "can operate in
either IPv4 or IPv6 modes". This has a number of consequences. Clearly
an IPv4-only SP network will not interoperate with an IPv6-only
enterprise network. Also an SP network or an enterprise network might
not be wholly IPv4 or IPv6 (e.g., signalling is terminated on IPv6,
media on IPv4, or vice versa). Interoperation is normally solved either
by dual stack devices or by interworking. Moreover, the choice of IP
version also impacts signalling (e.g., in header fields such as Via and
in SDP). Negotiation of the version to be used for media needs to be
accomplished using ICE or ICE-lite. To claim support for IPv6, all these
issues would need to be addressed. Again, with a view to lowering the
bar for version 1.1, we should mandate IPv4 support. Optional IPv6
support, perhaps based on dual-stack devices, could be a topic for a
future version of the specification.
