SIP Forum and BITKOM to Partner in the Ongoing Development of SIPconnect SIP Trunking Specification

New collaboration expands International support for groundbreaking SIP trunking initiative that provides framework for achieving widespread interoperability of network elements between SIP-enabled enterprises and service provider networks

NORTH ANDOVER, MA (November 5, 2013) – The SIP Forum announced today a new alliance with BITKOM, the Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media in Germany, in the development of the next update to the SIP Forum’s SIPconnect 1.1 Technical Specification.

The SIPconnect Technical Recommendation, which represents the consensus of a broad cross section of the global telecom community, is one of the most important initiatives of the SIP Forum, aimed at providing an up-to-date, international framework for direct IP peering between Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-enabled enterprises and service provider networks, ensuring the interoperability of network elements across the IP environment and providing a level playing field for vendors and service providers as they develop new equipment and IP applications for deployment. The formal endorsement of SIPconnect by BITKOM will provide valuable technical input and peer review by one of the European Union’s most prominent technical associations, and help ensure that the next version of SIPconnect meets the requirements of BITKOM members. As part of the agreement, the two organizations will pool requirements as they work towards an update of their respective SIP trunking specifications.

According to Andrew Hutton, Member of the SIP Forum Board of Directors and the official liaison between the SIP Forum and BITKOM, “This is a great opportunity for our two organizations to promote a standardized profile for SIP Trunking based on the existing SIP Forum SIPconnect 1.1 specification and to further develop this, so improving interoperability and reducing costs in the SIP Trunking market.”

According to Johannes Weicksel, Head of Communication Technologies & Intelligent Mobility at BITKOM, “Our new partnership with the SIP Forum in the evolution of SIPconnect reflects our recognition of the need for consistent standards in the deployment of SIP trunking on an International basis. If a company plans on buying a PBX that uses a SIP trunk, it has to ensure that the equipment is compatible and interoperable with the network of the provider.”

About the SIP Forum

The SIP Forum is an International IP communications industry association and technical community that engages in numerous activities that promote and advance SIP-based technology, such as the development of industry recommendations, the SIPit, SIPconnect-it and RTCWeb-it interoperability and testing events, special workshops, educational seminars, and general promotion of SIP in the industry. The SIP Forum is also the producer of the annual SIPNOC conferences (for SIP Network Operators Conference), focused on the technical requirements of the service provider community. One of the Forum’s notable technical activities is the development of the SIPconnect Technical Recommendation – a standards-based SIP trunking recommendation that provides detailed guidelines for direct IP peering and interoperability between IP PBXs and SIP-based service provider networks. Other important Forum initiatives include work in WebRTC, SIP and IPv6, User Agent Configuration, VRS interoperability, NNI (Network-to-Network Interface), security, and Fax-over-IP interoperability.
