file icon Secure IP Telepony for the Enterprisehot!
11.05.2005

Security is an important consideration when implementing VoIP because each element in the VoIP infrastructure, accessible on the network like any computer, can be attacked or used as a launching point for deeper attacks. In addition, VoIP presents certain specific security challenges. Lastly, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a new application protocol for VoIP and the firewall must understand this protocol to properly enforce the companyâ_Ts security policies.

Pingtel and Check Point offer a VoIP solution that addresses these concerns. This white paper discusses both the issues, and proposed solutions.

Regardless of opportunity, interactive communication over IP networks must be able to reach anyone, anywhere, anytime to maximize its value. To paraphrase Metcalfe's Law: the usefulÂ-ness, or utility, of interactive cormnunication equals the square of the number of users. New interactive communication services and applications, therefore, must ultimately span business and consumer, wired and wireless networks.

Consequently, simply building standalone voice, video and multimedia over IP network islands is not sufficient. They must be built and interconnected in a way that ensures security and peak performance end-to-end. Businesses and consumers will be satisfied with - and pay good money for - nothing less.

file icon SIP - The Session Initian Protocol for Enterprise SIP Solutions (Siemens)hot!
13.10.2004
Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of SIP â_" Session Initiation Protocol within the enterprise.

This paper summarizes where SIP has come from, how it works, and what makes it such a useful enabling protocol. It then describes how SIP is used in applications including telephony, conferencing and messaging, back office integration and how it is being extended to provide innovative services and accommodate the requirements of a real time IP communication.

From an application point of view SIP is continuing to develop rapidly and is innovative as we continue to envision all of its uses for home and business. This white paper is aimed at people who want to understand the concepts and drives behind SIP adoption and how it is evolving to support new enterprise business applications.

01.09.2001
The development of VoIP has been characterized by a perpetual battle to deliver the full-range of applications end users and service providers want, while balancing that with manageability and a straightforward design that eases deployment and development. One protocol that has fit that bill is the IETF's session initiation protocol (SIP).

Executive Summary

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is continuing to develop rapidly and it is difficult to keep up with all of its innovations and uses. This white paper is aimed at people who want to understand the concepts and drivers behind SIP adoption, and how it is evolving to face new challenges. This paper summarizes where SIP has come from, how it works, and what makes it such a useful protocol. It then describes how SIP is used in applications including telephony, conferencing and messaging, and how it is being extended to provide innovative services and accommodate the requirements of real-world deployment, where NATs, service level agreements and regulators exist. In covering this broad range of SIP-related topics, it provides a summary of the state of this increasingly important protocol.

file icon SIP Server Technical Overview (Radvision)hot!
21.07.2004
With the advance of SIP, server logic has become increasingly complex. SIP Servers need to deal with varying network topologies (such as public Internet networks, cellular networks, broadband residential networks), complex routing policies, security and SIP extensions. SIP Servers often need to handle high message/transaction rates and yield real-time performance and scalability, high throughput, and low delay. This chapter discusses the protocol aspects of SIP Server behavior and the usage of the RADVISION SIP Server Platform to address the challenges of effective SIP Server development

file icon SIP Specifications and the Java™ Platformshot!
01.09.2003
The goal of this whitepaper is to identify the specifications to the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)[1] defined through the Java Community ProcessSM (JCPSM) [2]. This document inspects each Java SIP specification describing the functionality, architecture, platform supported and how each interface relates to the other Java interfaces to SIP. This is not a tutorial on SIP or the Java language [3] and it is assumed that the reader has a reasonable understanding of both the Java language and the SIP protocol and their potential functions within an IP Communications network.

Present enterprise communications systems and applications provide integration of voice and data services. Still, proprietary technology and architecture discrepancies make it difficult to implement and deploy new converged communications services. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) brings user centric Internet Telephony. This model provides new converged communications services based on presence, mobility and user preferences. SIP technology promotes distributed architecture models, and seamless integration with IP technology. SIP is an open extensible Voice over IP (VoIP) protocol and is a framework for building voice and data communication applications. This article presents what SIP brings to enterprise communication applications and how customers can manage a smooth transition to SIP based services with the example of the OmniPCXIP communication server.

file icon SIP: Protocol Overview (Radvision)hot!
20.02.2004
The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signaling protocol for initiating, managing and terminating voice and video sessions across packet networks. SIP sessions involve one or more participants and can use unicast or multicast communication. Borrowing from ubiquitous Internet protocols, such as HTTP and SMTP, SIP is text-encoded and highly extensible. SIP may be extended to accommodate features and services such as call control services, mobility, interoperability with existing telephony systems, and more.

SIP is being developed by the SIP Working Group, within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The protocol is published as IETF RFC 2543 and currently has the status of a proposed standard.

This White Paper describes the key constituents of SIP.

30.06.2004
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) builds on the IP communications foundation by providing a standards-based approach to enabling IP communications with numerous devices and applications. This paper describes the benefits of SIP to enterprise customers and explains the comprehensive CiscoÂR roadmap for delivering SIP-based solutionsâ_"an evolving strategy that helps deliver stronger IP communications benefits to enterprise customers today and in the future. Organizations that adopt Cisco solutions can reap the benefits of IP communications and establish a solid foundation to support new and emerging SIP networking technologies.

Support for Session Initiation Protocol, or SIP, is essential in todayâ_Ts enterprise communications environment. With the standardization of SIP as the Internet protocol for applications such as VoIP, instant messaging and IP telephony, businesses are eager to adapt their existing hardware to accept SIP. However, far too many companies have made substantial investments into legacy firewall technologies that are not capable of supporting this type of communication. In addition, enterprises are reluctant to touch existing security infrastructure for fear of creating security breaches.

The award-winning Ingate SIParator® addresses these issues by offering the introduction of a SIP-capable communications infrastructure while preserving the investment made in legacy firewalls.
