Enterprising with SIP - A Technology Overview (Avaya)hot!
- 02.02.2004
-
The vision that Avaya has for converged voice and data communications is to create a network environment that supports maximum enterprise efficiency. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) [18] is a key technology for this evolution towards a converged communication architecture. SIP as an enabler of converged communication applications has been able to gain industry-wide acceptance by placing control of the communication across distributed networked entities and by providing a means of integration at various levels in the protocol stack. Such integration is now possible in a multi-vendor environment with multiple applications across a wide range of industry sectors. Converged communications that is driven by ubiquitous IP network connectivity defines the next stage of evolution in enterprise communications.
SIP is an application layer, peer-to-peer communication protocol that facilitates openness, simplicity, flexibility, and reuse in an "All IP" Architecture. This paper offers a look at how Avaya views SIP in enterprise evolution. It also describes SIP technology, elaborates on the role of SIP in realizing converged communications, and describes details of the SIP protocol and associated technologies.

Secure IP Telepony for the Enterprisehot!
- 11.05.2005

Security is an important consideration when implementing VoIP because each element in the VoIP infrastructure, accessible on the network like any computer, can be attacked or used as a launching point for deeper attacks. In addition, VoIP presents certain specific security challenges. Lastly, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a new application protocol for VoIP and the firewall must understand this protocol to properly enforce the company_Ts security policies.
Pingtel and Check Point offer a VoIP solution that addresses these concerns. This white paper discusses both the issues, and proposed solutions.

SIP-related White Paper (Alcatel)hot!
- 01.01.2003

Present enterprise communications systems and applications provide integration of voice and data services. Still, proprietary technology and architecture discrepancies make it difficult to implement and deploy new converged communications services. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) brings user centric Internet Telephony. This model provides new converged communications services based on presence, mobility and user preferences. SIP technology promotes distributed architecture models, and seamless integration with IP technology. SIP is an open extensible Voice over IP (VoIP) protocol and is a framework for building voice and data communication applications. This article presents what SIP brings to enterprise communication applications and how customers can manage a smooth transition to SIP based services with the example of the OmniPCXIP communication server.

Testing SIP to Saturation (UNH-IOL)hot!
- 07.09.2006
- The SIP (session initiation protocol) signaling protocol is emerging as the industry’s preferred Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. As such, SIP’s scalability is key to VoIP technology’s continued adoption, and the need to test SIP user agents and servers under heavily saturated scenarios is becoming more acute. SIP servers must be able to bear heavy traffic loads for user registration and call setup functions that require reading from and writing to one or more large dynamic database(s). The corresponding test tools, call generators, terminators and analyzers must all be capable of processing the same significant loads. The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) can test a large variety of VoIP and traditional telephony systems; however the focus of this paper is not to demonstrate the comparative performance of individual SIP servers, but rather to delineate issues involved in testing SIP servers under heavy call saturation.

SIP Specifications and the Java™ Platformshot!
- 01.09.2003
- The goal of this whitepaper is to identify the specifications to the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)[1] defined through the Java Community ProcessSM (JCPSM) [2]. This document inspects each Java SIP specification describing the functionality, architecture, platform supported and how each interface relates to the other Java interfaces to SIP. This is not a tutorial on SIP or the Java language [3] and it is assumed that the reader has a reasonable understanding of both the Java language and the SIP protocol and their potential functions within an IP Communications network.

Overview of H.323 - SIP Interworking (Radvision)hot!
- 16.05.2001
-
Looking at IP networks and VoIP, it is clear that both protocols - SIP and H.323 - are widely deployed and here to stay. For carriers wishing to provide global VoIP services, the interconnection of these disparate networks into a unified VoIP network is an urgent and high priority. The SIP-H.323 InterWorking Function (IWF) has been defined as a logical entity that allows the interworking between the SIP and H.323 protocols. This includes call sequence mapping, message parameter mapping, translation between H.245 and SDP, state machines, and the handling of different call procedures.
This paper looks at the issues and challenges of the IWF and presents a number of approaches for achieving the necessary functionality.

Executive Summary
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is continuing to develop rapidly and it is difficult to keep up with all of its innovations and uses. This white paper is aimed at people who want to understand the concepts and drivers behind SIP adoption, and how it is evolving to face new challenges. This paper summarizes where SIP has come from, how it works, and what makes it such a useful protocol. It then describes how SIP is used in applications including telephony, conferencing and messaging, and how it is being extended to provide innovative services and accommodate the requirements of real-world deployment, where NATs, service level agreements and regulators exist. In covering this broad range of SIP-related topics, it provides a summary of the state of this increasingly important protocol.

Solving the Firewall/NAT Traversal Issue of SIP: Who Should Control Your Security Infrastructure?hot!
- 17.05.2007
- Solving the Firewall/NAT Traversal Issue of SIP: Who Should Control Your Security Infrastructure? Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has become the signaling protocol of choice for realtime communications, including Voice over IP (VoIP){mosimage}. However, SIP communication does not reach users on the local area network (LAN) behind firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) routers automatically. This issue of SIP traffic not traversing the enterprise firewall or NAT is critical to any SIP implementation, including VoIP. Until all firewalls are SIP capable in order to support the wide-scale deployment of realtime enterprise communications, several solutions have been proposed to work around the firewall/NAT traversal problem. Many of these solutions have serious security implications; there are also solutions that allow you to remain in control. The choice of method for traversing firewalls/NATs is, to a large extent, dependent on the answer to the questions: “Who should be in control of your security infrastructure: the firewall administrator, the user or a service provider?” and, “Do we want a solution that is predictable and functions reliably with SIP standard compliant equipment or is it sufficient with a best effort solution that works in certain scenarios and, perhaps, only with a specific operator?” This white paper outlines the pros and cons of each solution, so you can make the best decision for your network.

Regardless of opportunity, interactive communication over IP networks must be able to reach anyone, anywhere, anytime to maximize its value. To paraphrase Metcalfe's Law: the useful-ness, or utility, of interactive cormnunication equals the square of the number of users. New interactive communication services and applications, therefore, must ultimately span business and consumer, wired and wireless networks.
Consequently, simply building standalone voice, video and multimedia over IP network islands is not sufficient. They must be built and interconnected in a way that ensures security and peak performance end-to-end. Businesses and consumers will be satisfied with - and pay good money for - nothing less.

Robustness testing of SIP implementations (Codenomicon)hot!
- 18.11.2003
-
Introduction
SIP[4] will be a part of future IP telephony infrastructure, raising new security concerns and issues. As past experience has shown, a majority of these problems are due to software vulnerabilities. One class of software vulnerabilities is introduced during implementation, in the coding process, due to non-robust handling of input data. An example listing of vulnerability types and failures is in Table 1.
One way to counter these vulnerabilities is to do white box testing and to perform code audits. This white paper discusses this process.

In recent years, the business world has reaped tremendous benefits from the many exciting products and applications made possible by the marriage of data and voice technologies. Now, the efficiencies and enhanced services resulting from that revolution are being enhanced by the magnitude of change possible as data networks become the transport for voice. IP Telephony, or Voice over IP (VoIP), is the exploding new technology enabling voice to be carried over IP-based, packet-switched local and wide area networks.
Now the efficiencies and enhanced services resulting from that revolution are being eclipsed by the magnitude of change possible as data networks become the transport for voice. The open standards approach adopted within the voice over IP world has meant that public and private network operators are now able to remove their dependence on buying everything from one vendor that was a fact of life in the closed/proprietary nature of the traditional circuit- switched world. Other advantages that have attracted a lot of attention include the ability to bypass the PSTN and its toll charges, applications made possible by merging voice with Internet data, lower operating expenses, and network service presence.
