The vision that Avaya has for converged voice and data communications is to create a network environment that supports maximum enterprise efficiency. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) [18] is a key technology for this evolution towards a converged communication architecture. SIP as an enabler of converged communication applications has been able to gain industry-wide acceptance by placing control of the communication across distributed networked entities and by providing a means of integration at various levels in the protocol stack. Such integration is now possible in a multi-vendor environment with multiple applications across a wide range of industry sectors. Converged communications that is driven by ubiquitous IP network connectivity defines the next stage of evolution in enterprise communications.

SIP is an application layer, peer-to-peer communication protocol that facilitates openness, simplicity, flexibility, and reuse in an "All IP" Architecture. This paper offers a look at how Avaya views SIP in enterprise evolution. It also describes SIP technology, elaborates on the role of SIP in realizing converged communications, and describes details of the SIP protocol and associated technologies.

Security is an important consideration when implementing VoIP because each element in the VoIP infrastructure, accessible on the network like any computer, can be attacked or used as a launching point for deeper attacks. In addition, VoIP presents certain specific security challenges. Lastly, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a new application protocol for VoIP and the firewall must understand this protocol to properly enforce the company_Ts security policies.

Pingtel and Check Point offer a VoIP solution that addresses these concerns. This white paper discusses both the issues, and proposed solutions.

The SIP (session initiation protocol) signaling protocol is emerging as the industry’s preferred Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. As such, SIP’s scalability is key to VoIP technology’s continued adoption, and the need to test SIP user agents and servers under heavily saturated scenarios is becoming more acute. SIP servers must be able to bear heavy traffic loads for user registration and call setup functions that require reading from and writing to one or more large dynamic database(s). The corresponding test tools, call generators, terminators and analyzers must all be capable of processing the same significant loads. The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) can test a large variety of VoIP and traditional telephony systems; however the focus of this paper is not to demonstrate the comparative performance of individual SIP servers, but rather to delineate issues involved in testing SIP servers under heavy call saturation.

Solving the Firewall/NAT Traversal Issue of SIP: Who Should Control Your Security Infrastructure? Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has become the signaling protocol of choice for realtime communications, including Voice over IP (VoIP){mosimage}. However, SIP communication does not reach users on the local area network (LAN) behind firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) routers automatically. This issue of SIP traffic not traversing the enterprise firewall or NAT is critical to any SIP implementation, including VoIP. Until all firewalls are SIP capable in order to support the wide-scale deployment of realtime enterprise communications, several solutions have been proposed to work around the firewall/NAT traversal problem. Many of these solutions have serious security implications; there are also solutions that allow you to remain in control. The choice of method for traversing firewalls/NATs is, to a large extent, dependent on the answer to the questions: “Who should be in control of your security infrastructure: the firewall administrator, the user or a service provider?” and, “Do we want a solution that is predictable and functions reliably with SIP standard compliant equipment or is it sufficient with a best effort solution that works in certain scenarios and, perhaps, only with a specific operator?” This white paper outlines the pros and cons of each solution, so you can make the best decision for your network.

SIP[4] will be a part of future IP telephony infrastructure, raising new security concerns and issues. As past experience has shown, a majority of these problems are due to software vulnerabilities. One class of software vulnerabilities is introduced during implementation, in the coding process, due to non-robust handling of input data. An example listing of vulnerability types and failures is in Table 1.

One way to counter these vulnerabilities is to do white box testing and to perform code audits. This white paper discusses this process.
