SIP_Security_white_paper_Ahot!

Person-to-person realtime IP communications, like presence, VoIP and video applications, offer clear benefits for the enterprise as time- and money-savers. Unified functionality is now available, where all of the above are integrated into one streamlined application and interconnect with other networks. This creates a very important business tool and usage is increasing.
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has emerged as the protocol that will fuel this development. Its simplicity and the fact that it is based on Internet standards give SIP clear advantages over older protocols. Analysts predict that SIP will dominate and the evidence given by actual deployments among service providers and equipment vendors further support that prediction.
This white paper describes the security issues associated with SIP, and how to address them within enterprise domains.

Solving the Firewall/NAT Traversal Issue of SIP: Who Should Control Your Security Infrastructure?hot!
- 17.05.2007
- Solving the Firewall/NAT Traversal Issue of SIP: Who Should Control Your Security Infrastructure? Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has become the signaling protocol of choice for realtime communications, including Voice over IP (VoIP){mosimage}. However, SIP communication does not reach users on the local area network (LAN) behind firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) routers automatically. This issue of SIP traffic not traversing the enterprise firewall or NAT is critical to any SIP implementation, including VoIP. Until all firewalls are SIP capable in order to support the wide-scale deployment of realtime enterprise communications, several solutions have been proposed to work around the firewall/NAT traversal problem. Many of these solutions have serious security implications; there are also solutions that allow you to remain in control. The choice of method for traversing firewalls/NATs is, to a large extent, dependent on the answer to the questions: “Who should be in control of your security infrastructure: the firewall administrator, the user or a service provider?” and, “Do we want a solution that is predictable and functions reliably with SIP standard compliant equipment or is it sufficient with a best effort solution that works in certain scenarios and, perhaps, only with a specific operator?” This white paper outlines the pros and cons of each solution, so you can make the best decision for your network.

Summary Test Report: Acme Packet Net-Net PAC (CT Labs)hot!
- 14.03.2006
-
CT Labs was contracted by Acme PacketTM to verify the performance of the Acme Packet Net-Net PACTM session border controller and to produce a report summarizing the results. To facilitate this Empirix provided testing products, script engineering, and lab facilities to support this high call volume test. During the test, quality assurance engineers from Acme Packet were available to help configure and support their product.

Testing SIP to Saturation (UNH-IOL)hot!
- 07.09.2006
- The SIP (session initiation protocol) signaling protocol is emerging as the industry’s preferred Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. As such, SIP’s scalability is key to VoIP technology’s continued adoption, and the need to test SIP user agents and servers under heavily saturated scenarios is becoming more acute. SIP servers must be able to bear heavy traffic loads for user registration and call setup functions that require reading from and writing to one or more large dynamic database(s). The corresponding test tools, call generators, terminators and analyzers must all be capable of processing the same significant loads. The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) can test a large variety of VoIP and traditional telephony systems; however the focus of this paper is not to demonstrate the comparative performance of individual SIP servers, but rather to delineate issues involved in testing SIP servers under heavy call saturation.

Understanding SIP (Ubiquity)hot!
- 22.07.2004
- This paper provides a high-level overview of what SIP is and does. It charts SIP's migration from the laboratory to the marketplace. It describes the services SIP provides and the initiatives underway that will spur its growth. It also details the key features that distinguish SIP among protocols and diagrams how a SIP session takes place.

White Paper on SIP Servers (RADVISION)hot!
- 05.04.2004
- SIP Servers are essential network elements that enable SIP endpoints to exchange messages, register user location, and seamlessly move between networks. SIP Servers enable network operators to install routing and security policies, authenticate users and manage user locations.
